The Swift hybrid caught testing appears to be the global-spec model and it could be evaluating ADAS capabilities tailored for Indian roads

The fourth-generation Maruti Suzuki Swift went on sale in the domestic market a few months ago and it has been well received by customers. It is currently the best-selling hatchback in India and can often be found at the top of the passenger vehicle sales charts every month. Amongst the key changes incorporated was the debut of the new 1.2L Z12E petrol engine.

The three-cylinder powertrain replaced the four-cylinder K-series engine and it has long been speculated to get a strong hybrid system in the future. It now features idle start/stop technology only as standard but the arrival of a larger battery pack and the rumoured range extender system could pump up the claimed fuel economy to over 35 kilometres per litre.

Hot on the heels, a new test mule of the compact hatchback has been spotted testing. In the global market, the Suzuki Swift offers two powertrain choices: a 1.2L petrol engine and a 1.2L petrol-hybrid setup. Transmission options include a five-speed manual and a CVT gearbox. Additionally, the Swift is available in both FWD and 4WD configurations.

Caught testing in Bengaluru, it does not wear any camouflage and a Hybrid badge can be clearly seen at the back. The powertrain in the global Swift with mild-hybrid technology produces almost similar performance as the India-spec version. We suspect the prototype could be evaluating ADAS capabilities required for local driving conditions.

Maruti Suzuki will indeed introduce the e Vitara with the ADAS suite of driver-assistive and safety systems. The highly anticipated EV is set to make its Indian debut at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January, held in New Delhi. A market launch will follow swiftly by March 2025, with international rollouts slated for mid-2025.
