Cyclone Fengal has intensified fears across Tamil Nadu as it approaches the northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts the cyclone will make landfall this evening (November 30) between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, with wind speeds ranging from 70-80 kmph. Heavy rainfall continues to drench several districts, exacerbating flooding and waterlogging issues.

Schools and Airports Shut Down

  • Chennai International Airport: Temporarily closed until 7 pm on Saturday due to adverse weather conditions. All Indigo Airlines flights have been rerouted to other airports.
  • School Closures: Educational institutions in nine districts of Tamil Nadu remain closed to ensure student safety amid the heavy rains.

Heightened Security Along Coastal Areas

  • Surveillance: Senior Superintendent of Police Kalaivannan has conducted inspections of vulnerable areas in Puducherry to ensure public safety.

Flooding and Waterlogging in Chennai

Heavy rainfall has flooded roads in Chennai, causing severe waterlogging:

  • Affected Areas: Regions like New Washermanpet, Gemini Flyover, and Mount Road are submerged, with water reaching ankle levels.
  • Impact: Strong winds have uprooted trees in Besant Nagar, adding to the disruptions.

IMD Issues Red Alert

The IMD has issued a red alert for several regions in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and South Andhra Pradesh, warning residents to stay cautious as Cyclone Fengal approaches:

  • Tracking the Cyclone: The IMD is closely monitoring the storm using Doppler Weather Radars in Chennai and Sriharikota, along with satellite data.
  • Landfall Expected: Cyclone Fengal is projected to make landfall tonight, causing widespread rains and strong winds.

Precautionary Measures for Public Safety
