As Cyclone Fengal barrels toward the Tamil Nadu coast, the state braces for impact with heavy rains, strong winds, and rising tides already affecting several regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and parts of South Andhra Pradesh, urging residents and authorities to prepare for the storm’s landfall, expected tomorrow evening.
Chennai Airport Operations Halted
In response to the intensifying winds, the Chennai Airport has temporarily suspended operations until 7 PM today. Authorities cited safety concerns as strong gusts and heavy rainfall began affecting the area. Travelers are advised to check with airlines for updates on flight rescheduling.
Schools and Colleges Closed Across Districts
The Tamil Nadu government has declared holidays for schools and colleges in the districts expected to bear the brunt of the storm, including:
- Chennai
- Kancheepuram
- Chengalpattu
- Tiruvallur
Similar measures have been announced for Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, and Mayiladuthurai, which are likely to face heavy rains and gusty winds.
Cyclone Fengal’s Path and Intensity
The IMD reported that Cyclone Fengal, currently located over the southwest Bay of Bengal, is moving north-northwestward at 7 km/h. The storm’s trajectory suggests it will make landfall near Chennai, bringing sustained winds and heavy rainfall to coastal and adjoining areas.
Rainfall and Wind Warnings
The IMD has forecast intense downpours in the following districts:
- Chennai
- Kancheepuram
- Chengalpattu
- Tiruvallur
Residents in these regions have been urged to remain indoors and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Fishermen have been strictly advised against venturing into the sea as high tides and rough conditions prevail.
