In addition to EVs, Maruti Suzuki and Toyota will launch multiple new hybrid SUVs in the Indian market
Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are currently playing in the mass-market hybrid segment with the Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser Hyryder. In order to further expand the portfolio, new hybrid SUVs are under development, which are expected to debut next year i.e. 2025. In this article, we will look at the upcoming Maruti Suzuki and Toyota hybrid SUVs in India.
1. Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara-Based 7-Seater Hybrid SUV
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) will launch the 7-seater version of the Grand Vitara next year. Internally codenamed Y17, the three-row SUV is already under development. Based on Suzuki’s Global C platform, the upcoming Maruti 7-seater SUV will share the powertrain with the current Grand Vitara, comprising of the strong hybrid and 1.5 litre K15C naturally aspirated petrol engines.
Under the hood, the strong hybrid SUV will employ the familiar 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine which runs on Atkinson, paired with a 177.6 V lithium-ion battery pack which powers the electric motor. The combined power output from the system stands at 114 bhp and 141 Nm of peak torque. The setup is mated to an e-CVT gearbox.

2. Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder-Based 7-Seater Hybrid SUV
Following the suit, Toyota will launch the 7-seater version of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder next year. The SUV will be based on the Grand Vitara 7-seater model codenamed Y17. Much like its Maruti Suzuki counterpart, the 7-seater SUV based on the Hyryder will be underpinned by the familiar Global C platform. The three-row SUV will be powered by the familiar 1.5 litre K15C naturally aspirated petrol engine and the 1.5 litre strong hybrid 3-cylinder petrol engine which runs on Atkinson, paired with a 177.6 V lithium-ion battery pack.
3. Maruti Suzuki Fronx Facelift Hybrid
Internally codenamed YTB, the Fronx Facelift will be launched in India next year. The crossover SUV debuted in the domestic market in 2023. It is currently available with 1.2 litre K12C naturally aspirated petrol and 1.0 litre BoosterJet turbo petrol mild-hybrid engine options. The facelifted Fronx will likely use the Maruti Suzuki’s new HEV series hybrid powertrain technology which could deliver a fuel efficiency of over 30 kmpl. The highlight of the Fronx Facelift will be its updated design, new features and an efficient hybrid powertrain.

4. Toyota Fortuner Hybrid
The Toyota Fortuner mild-hybrid debuted early this year in South Africa and will be launched in other markets in a phased manner. The SUV is powered by the familiar 2.8 litre 1GD-FTV diesel engine, paired with a 48V mild hybrid system, thus making it more frugal. As per Toyota, the Fortuner MHEV is 5% more fuel efficient than the regular Fortuner 2.8 diesel. The power output figures stand at 201 bhp and 500 Nm of peak torque. Much like the current model, the Fortuner Hybrid will continue to be offered in both 2WD and 4WD configurations. In India, the Toyota Fortuner Hybrid will likely go on sale next year.
